Musical Maturity

I think that an important part of being a mature musician is being able to appreciate all kinds of music, even if you don’t really prefer to play or listen to them. It’s especially important when it’s Christian music designed to give glory to God, though even secular music still represents (in most cases) someone’s best efforts at expressing themselves musically in a style relevant to their culture, whether it be geographically or temporally different from one’s own.

For example, after our Sunday morning church service, Josh played a CD of saxophone praise music for ambience. Someone in my family (whom I won’t identify) remarked that it was dumb, when it was really very nice and relaxing, and totally appropriate for the situation. I didn’t really take them to task for it, but I should have.

I think I personally have nearly reached this point … although Urban/Rap music is still the hardest for me to appreciate, followed by 1980’s Pop (against which I’ve been conditioned by various friends).
