I must agree that Stargate: Atlantis is a pretty rocking show. It’s good that it’s on Sci-Fi. I think that Stargate: SG-1 would’ve done much better over the past couple of years if it hadn’t done a stint on Showtime. Of course, that all depends on whom you ask, given the mishaps that have occurred at Sci-Fi (Farscape debacle, etc.). I don’t know if it’s the new Star Trek, but it is exciting. I only worry a little about the long-term viability of the concept, but then again, I loved Babylon 5, and that was supposed to end.

I didn’t mean “the new Star Trek” as though Atlantis could command the phenomenal popularity of Trek, but that it was similar in concept and ideas, and could perhaps fill some of the hole left by ST’s recent efforts. I don’t think anything will replace TNG in the exploration of existential and ethical questions for the future. Although, Century City had some good ideas … at least in the four episodes that managed to be aired.

Also, I’m impressed that Sci-Fi appears to be attempting to — at least partially — redeem itself for the Farscape ‘debacle’ (a good word).

I don’t get cable, but from your description, this sounds a lot like Sea Quest crossed with ST: Voyager, only better than either or both combined.
