Airport Express

I got an Airport Express yesterday. I almost picked one up when Jennifer and I were at the Apple Store on Saturday, but balked at the price until I looked up other 802.11g routers on Froogle. Good ones all seem to be around the $90-100 price point. And, I told myself, I’d wanted one for a long time anyway.

It took me all day to set it up.

I eventually found this thread, and when I followed its suggestion to scale the connection speed back to 10Mbps, it worked fine. So much for the 54Mbps wonder of 802.11g. I think it doesn’t like the ~100 ft. of cable it has to push through to get to the other router.

Sudden flash of reason: I suppose it could have something to do with the fact that my main Linksys gateway (not directly connected to the Airport Express) only has 10Mbps ports. Hmmm.

Anyway. The Airport Express is pretty cool now that it’s working. It’s a print server, too. I haven’t played with the AirTunes feature yet. I think I’m going to bring in my stereo cabinet and plug it into that.

Don’t waste anymore time. Set it up to stream music from iTunes right now, which is all my Express is doing right now. It is a very cool feature … one more wire liberated from the laptop too. I am getting an Extreme after Christmas to replace the 802.11b Lynksys main router I am using now, which can’t bridge to the Express.

It’s set up now. I have a wire duct-taped to the floor from the Airport Express to where the stereo is across the walkway (two feet). So much for wireless music, right? :) But now I can lay on the couch and listen and surf and print and everything.
