Daniel Bergey Commotion

Welcome to the Bible Belt

I’m still getting used to the fact that in South Carolina you can buy any kind of beer or wine in your local supermarket. It’s even easier to find than the milk. In Pennsylvania, it’s illegal to sell such things in a grocery or convenience store, or anywhere that’s not a state-owned liquor store. Here, it seems like it’s everywhere.

And am I the only one questioning the wisdom of selling alcohol in a gas station’s quickie-mart? The people who buy it are going to walk out the door and drive away.

The South may be more liberal about where beer can be sold, but there is a catch:

I bet that makes the lawmakers feel good.

While it might not be the best idea to sell alcohol in a gas staion where people will be driving, I don’t dissagree with alcohol not being state-run or controlled (still need liquor licenses to sell, of course, just not “state stores”). It would be much nicer if you didn’t have to run to a beer distributor in Pennsylvania where you can only buy cases (cha-ching!), or to a bar to pay an exorbitant amount and get all-smokey in the process.

We may shield our eyes against those who hug their bottles in little brown bags while driving. But at least we don’t do it on Sunday.

‘Cause people only walk to state-owned stores? ;)

Wait just a second…

I don’t remember saying that!

o.O … no wine and beer on Sundays? that’s interesting, given communion and all. i heard an interesting thing from a speaker called Os Guinness (of course he’s related to the famous Guinness family) over at Westminster seminary the other day: back in the century of gin when the whole Guinness beer thing was getting started, it was the evangelicals who would drink beer instead of gin—it was the drink of moderation.
